Alstom has revealed that it powers Chennai Metro Phase II following the commercial launch of passenger services on the newly built Corridor 4. Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the flagship project, marking a key milestone for Tamil Nadu’s urban transport. Specifically, the line utilizes 36 advanced driverless Metropolis trainsets manufactured entirely in India.
The 26-kilometre transit route connects Poonamallee Bypass to Light House through 28 stations. Consequently, this network provides faster, safer, and reliable travel for over 11 million residents across Chennai.
Localised Engineering and Indigenous Manufacturing Capabilities
Significantly, the project highlights local manufacturing strength under the national Make in India strategy.
“The manufacturing completion of all 36 trainsets designed in Bengaluru and manufactured at Sri City reflects India’s engineering capabilities and our commitment to world-class indigenous mobility solutions,” stated Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India.
