Raoghat Rail Connectivity Marks Historic Achievement
The railway extension connects remote areas of southern Chhattisgarh with the wider rail network. Consequently, residents can access Raipur and other destinations more conveniently.
Indian Railways completed the 95-kilometre Dalli Rajhara–Raoghat railway line at a cost of ₹1,628 crore. The final 17.5-kilometre section between Tadoki and Raoghat completed the project.
Furthermore, the new connection promises to improve access to education, healthcare, employment and commercial opportunities. Better transport links could also support local businesses and generate new economic activity.
The railway line also carries strategic industrial significance. Specifically, it will facilitate iron ore transportation from the Raoghat region. This could support the Bhilai Steel Plant and other iron and steel industry requirements.
Moreover, improved freight connectivity can streamline raw material movement and strengthen industrial supply chains. The expansion could also encourage investment and create employment opportunities across the surrounding areas.
Abhanpur–Kurud Broad-Gauge Line Expands Rail Access
Indian Railways has also inaugurated the Abhanpur–Kurud broad-gauge line, extending rail connectivity across central Chhattisgarh.
The project forms part of the Kendri–Dhamtari and Abhanpur–Rajim gauge-conversion initiatives. Railway authorities have already started passenger services between Abhanpur and Rajim following the completion of that section.
Meanwhile, workers have completed gauge conversion across the 22-kilometre Abhanpur–Kurud section. Work continues on the remaining Kurud–Dhamtari stretch, which authorities aim to complete soon.
The new line will improve access to Raipur, the state capital. Consequently, commuters, students, traders and other passengers can benefit from better transport options.
Additionally, the improved connection could strengthen regional commerce and support everyday travel. Farmers and rural communities may also benefit from easier access to larger markets and essential services.
New Raoghat–Raipur and Raipur–Kurud Passenger Trains Launched
The inauguration also marked the launch of two passenger services: Raoghat–Raipur and Raipur–Kurud.
These services will provide direct rail travel to Raipur for passengers along the respective routes. Therefore, students, working professionals and daily commuters can expect more convenient journeys.
Furthermore, improved rail access will help residents travel for medical treatment, education, employment and business activities. Farmers could also gain a more practical transport option when accessing larger agricultural markets.
The services may also support tourism and strengthen economic links between rural communities and urban centres. In turn, better mobility could contribute to broader social and economic development.
Indian Railways has set the fare for travel between Raipur and Raoghat at just ₹55. This affordable fare could make rail travel accessible to students, young people and regular commuters.
Raipur to Get Electric Locomotive Maintenance Facility
Railway authorities have laid the foundation stone for an electric locomotive maintenance facility in Raipur. The project aims to strengthen railway infrastructure and improve locomotive availability.
Once developed, the facility will have the capacity to maintain 300 high-horsepower electric locomotives. Consequently, Indian Railways expects the installation to support maintenance requirements and smoother train operations.
The facility will also help address the growing demand for freight transportation. Additionally, improved locomotive maintenance capacity could support the movement of industrial goods and strengthen railway operations.
The project represents another step towards expanding Chhattisgarh’s railway infrastructure. It also complements the state’s broader efforts to improve passenger mobility and freight connectivity.
Chhattisgarh Receives More Than ₹7,000 Crore in Rail Budget Allocation
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the new railway initiatives. He said the projects would benefit the state’s population of approximately three crore people.
Sai highlighted that Chhattisgarh received more than ₹7,000 crore under the railway budget for the current year. He described the allocation as evidence of the Centre’s commitment to railway expansion and passenger amenities.
Furthermore, he expressed confidence that the projects would strengthen connectivity in remote areas. He also expects better rail access to accelerate industrial, commercial and socioeconomic development.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated the people of Chhattisgarh on the new infrastructure and passenger services. He highlighted ongoing railway expansion under the Prime Minister’s leadership.
Vaishnaw cited the Dalli Rajhara–Raoghat line, the Kendri–Abhanpur–Rajim–Dhamtari gauge-conversion works and several multitracking projects. Additionally, work continues on the Kharsia–Parmalaksa double-line project.
The Union Cabinet has also approved the third railway line between Pendra Road, Bilaspur and Usalapur. These developments aim to expand network capacity and improve passenger services across the state.
New Railway Projects to Support Industrial and Regional Growth
The inauguration events took place at Raipur and Raoghat stations. Several public representatives attended the programmes alongside railway officials and other dignitaries.
At Raipur station, attendees included MPs Lakshmi Verma, Brijmohan Agrawal and Roopkumari Choudhary. MLAs Rajesh Moonat, Purandar Mishra and Motilal Sahu also attended.
At Raoghat station, MP Bhojraj Nag and MLA Vikram Usendi joined other dignitaries for the occasion.
Together, the new railway lines, passenger services and maintenance facility mark a significant expansion of Chhattisgarh’s rail infrastructure. Most importantly, the arrival of trains at Raoghat opens a new chapter for a previously unconnected area.
The projects are expected to improve access to essential services while supporting agriculture, trade and industrial activity. Moreover, stronger rail links could help remote communities participate more actively in the state’s economic growth.
