PM Modi on science and innovation said the true success of scientific research lies in translating laboratory discoveries into solutions that improve people’s lives. Addressing the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026 in New Delhi on Tuesday, he called for a stronger focus on practical applications and self-reliance in critical technologies.
The Prime Minister said India views science and technology as instruments for serving humanity, rather than tools of power or conflict. He stressed that technological progress should be measured by its ability to address real-world challenges and benefit ordinary citizens.
PM Modi calls for practical applications of research
Modi said scientific and technological advancements should not be judged solely by their sophistication. Their real value lies in how effectively they solve major problems and transform lives.
“The true success of science is realised when it moves from the lab to the land, directly improving the lives of ordinary citizens,” the Prime Minister said.
He added that technology-driven sectors may have different requirements, but their progress reflects India’s growing technological capabilities and pursuit of self-reliance.
The remarks highlighted the importance of connecting scientific research with practical needs. This includes developing technologies that can address challenges faced by citizens and strengthen the country’s capacity to find domestic solutions.
Research key to India’s technological self-reliance
The Prime Minister underlined the role of research in building a country’s technological capabilities. He said a nation’s ability to develop technology depends on the strength of its research ecosystem.
According to Modi, research enables countries to find solutions to their own problems and become self-reliant in critical technologies.
He also referred to India’s scientific heritage, citing contributions such as the discovery of zero, the development of the number system and advances in astronomy.
Modi said India was assessing its progress against the benchmark of using science to solve problems and improve lives.
Science and technology should serve humanity
The Prime Minister said science and technology have often been viewed globally through the lens of power and conflict. India, he said, believes these capabilities should instead be harnessed for human welfare.
He reiterated that the impact of technology depends on the problems it solves and the number of people whose lives it improves.
The address at ESTIC 2026 placed research, practical innovation and technological self-reliance at the centre of India’s science and technology priorities.
