The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) notified new consumer protection rules ending forced data plans by telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vi. Telecom companies frequently force consumers to purchase expensive bundled data packs, even when users only require basic calling services. Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha highlighted these new TRAI measures as a direct response to issues he raised in Parliament.

TRAI Rules Stop Forced Data Bundling by Telcos
Telecom service providers have long forced customers to pay for unused data by bundling internet services into standard prepaid plans. Under the Telecom Consumers Protection (13th Amendment) Regulations, 2026, telcos must now offer standalone voice-and-SMS-only Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs).
Operators must also provide voice-only vouchers matching shorter validity periods with appropriately reduced tariffs. TRAI finalized these guidelines after evaluating 1,132 stakeholder responses during public consultations.

New 30-Day Mandate Ends 13-Recharge Cycle Exploitation
Telcos previously forced prepaid users onto 28-day validity cycles, effectively requiring 13 recharges annually instead of 12. TRAI’s updated framework mandates that operators provide plans lasting a full 30 days or renewing on the exact same date each month.
Raghav Chadha noted that these regulations will protect low-income households and senior citizens who rely exclusively on basic calling and incoming services. He described the regulatory intervention as a prime example of constructive politics addressing genuine public grievances.
