The Union Cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the key cabinet meeting. Consequently, this mega initiative will strengthen India’s intra-state power grid network.

Additionally, the project will evacuate up to 135 Gigawatt of renewable energy across multiple states.

Huge Investment to Bolster Green Energy Corridor Phase-III Network

Specifically, the total project cost stands at Rs 1,86,405 crore. The scheme will run until FY 2032-33. Therefore, the government allocated Rs 1,36,378 crore for intra-state transmission development. Meanwhile, it set aside Rs 50,000 crore for battery storage systems.

Furthermore, the Cabinet sanctioned total Central Financial Support of Rs 54,082 crore. Thus, central assistance will offset transmission charges. Consequently, this financial backing will lower electricity costs for Indian citizens.

Scheme ComponentAllocated Outlay (Rs Crore)
Intra-State Transmission (InSTS)1,36,378
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)50,000
Total Scheme Outlay1,86,405
Total Central Financial Support54,082

Deployment of 50 GWh Battery Energy Storage Systems

Significantly, the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III includes 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems. Developers will deploy these battery units near renewable generation sites.

However, authorities can also set up storage at other critical locations. As a result, the batteries will provide essential grid flexibility. Specifically, they will reduce peak-hour curtailment. Likewise, the storage units will meet non-solar hour power demand.

Project Execution and Long-Term Targets

Moreover, agencies will implement all greenfield transmission projects via competitive bidding. State Transmission Utilities will oversee the complete rollout. Meanwhile, private developers will operate under the Build-Own-Operate-Maintain model. Conversely, brownfield upgrades will follow a cost-plus basis.

Ultimately, the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III supports India’s goal of 900 GW non-fossil capacity by 2035. Furthermore, the scheme creates thousands of direct and indirect jobs across manufacturing, construction, and grid management sectors.
