National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited announced a big breakthrough for Bullet Train project execution on Saturday. The agency completed construction of the 480-metre-long Sabarmati River bridge along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. Consequently, this engineering achievement completes 18 out of 21 planned river bridges across Gujarat.
Engineering feat features 12-storey piers and longer spans
Standing 36 metres tall, the structure equals the height of a 12-storey building. Furthermore, the bridge sits between the Sabarmati and Ahmedabad bullet train stations, running parallel to Western Railway’s main line.
Engineers used five 76-metre spans and two 50-metre spans to reduce riverbed obstruction. Therefore, only four of the eight circular piers sit inside the riverbed itself.
| Structural Parameter | Engineering Specification & Details |
| Total Bridge Length | 480 metres across the Sabarmati River |
| Structure Height | 36 metres (118 feet, equivalent to a 12-storey building) |
| Pier Configuration | 8 circular piers (4 in riverbed, 2 on banks, 2 outside banks) |
| Span Architecture | Five 76-metre spans and two 50-metre spans (7 total spans) |
| Construction Method | Balanced Cantilever Method with post-tensioned segments |
| Gujarat River Bridges Status | 18 out of 21 completed by NHSRCL |
Balanced Cantilever Method speeds up river corridor construction
Additionally, NHSRCL built the bridge superstructure using the Balanced Cantilever Method without scaffolding below the deck. Construction crews sequentially erected 23 segments per span directly from the piers using post-tensioning techniques.
Meanwhile, NHSRCL continues rapid work across the entire 25-river-bridge corridor spanning Gujarat and Maharashtra. Thus, this milestone accelerates progress toward operationalizing India’s first high-speed rail network.
