The Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Policy 2026 was unveiled by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Thursday to position the state as a leading destination for semiconductor investments and microchip production.

Launched at the Secretariat in Chennai in the presence of Industries Minister S Keerthana, the policy seeks to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s electronics manufacturing capabilities and align the state’s ambitions with the Union government’s Semicon 2.0 programme.

According to the state government, the initiative has been taken forward by the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department. It is designed to attract investments into the semiconductor sector and support advanced electronics manufacturing.

Tamil Nadu semiconductor policy builds on infrastructure push

The policy builds on Tamil Nadu’s planned infrastructure investments, including a semiconductor and electronics park worth ₹175 crore at Maduramangalam in Kancheepuram district.

The upcoming park will span 422 acres and is intended to strengthen the state’s infrastructure for semiconductor and electronics-related activities, according to a government release.

The policy is part of Tamil Nadu’s broader effort to expand its industrial base and attract investment in high-value technology sectors. Semiconductors are a key component of modern electronics, supporting applications across automotive systems, consumer devices, telecommunications and data infrastructure.

However, the government has not disclosed specific investment commitments or implementation targets for the policy in the announcement.

Data centre launch complements semiconductor ambitions

The policy unveiling coincided with the launch of the CapitaLand Data Centre Chennai 01 facility. The government said the developments would support the state’s hardware manufacturing and digital infrastructure sectors.

The parallel initiatives reflect Tamil Nadu’s focus on strengthening both electronics production and the infrastructure needed to support growing digital demand.

The state is also pursuing an ambition to become a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036, the government release said. Expanding semiconductor manufacturing and related technology investments is part of its broader industrial development agenda.

Chief Secretary M Saikumar, Additional Chief Secretary S Vijayakumar, Guidance Tamil Nadu Managing Director and CEO Deepak Jacob, and Guidance Tamil Nadu Executive Director Pallavi Varma attended the launch event.

The policy is expected to provide a framework for Tamil Nadu’s semiconductor ambitions, with its impact depending on investment inflows, infrastructure development and the execution of its proposed initiatives.
