Hyderabad Metro eyes Personal Rapid Transit System (PRTS) networks to solve last-mile connectivity challenges and boost commuter convenience across key urban corridors. Specifically, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMR) completed a techno-economic feasibility study to introduce pod taxi systems under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. HMR Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmed announced the milestone during a stakeholder workshop organized to gather expert feedback. Furthermore, the proposed PRTS will provide a reliable, comfortable, and environment-friendly transport option between metro stations and key commercial hubs.
Feasibility study highlights priority corridors and network coverage
Consultant LEA Associates outlined two priority study areas during the technical presentation. Specifically, the first corridor covers the Raidurg-Kukatpally belt, connecting Raidurg and HITEC City metro stations with the Financial District.
Meanwhile, the second priority corridor links the Secretariat, Hussainsagar, Begumpet, Assembly area, and Secunderabad West metro station. Consequently, the automated pod transit system will directly serve high-density employment zones and tourist spots across Hyderabad.
| PRTS Priority Study Area | Strategic Network & Coverage Details |
| Corridor 1 (IT & Financial Zone) | Raidurg Metro, HITEC City Metro, Kukatpally & Financial District |
| Corridor 2 (Central & Heritage Zone) | Secretariat, Hussainsagar, Begumpet, Assembly & Secunderabad West |
| Project Delivery Model | Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework |
| Primary Project Objective | Improve first/last-mile connectivity & increase metro ridership |
| Key Stakeholder Partners | Traffic Police, IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad & Osmania University |
Stakeholder consultation and urban mobility benefits
Government Adviser N.V.S. Reddy highlighted that automated pod transport will significantly reduce dependence on private vehicles and intermediate public transport. Additionally, the system will increase overall metro ridership while curbing traffic congestion across rapidly expanding metropolitan sectors.
Currently, officials are compiling feedback from government departments, tech firms, real estate developers, and academic institutions like IIT Hyderabad. Therefore, as Hyderabad Metro eyes Personal Rapid Transit System deployment, project authorities prepare to finalize alignment details and depot locations for execution.
