Embraer’s strategic deal with Mahindra and Adani marks a major shift in India’s aviation market today. Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer selected the Mahindra Group as its main defence partner for the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) 60-aircraft Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) program. However, Embraer is partnering separately with the Adani Group to tap into expanding commercial aviation and regional connectivity markets. Therefore, this dual structure establishes clear boundaries between military and civilian aerospace initiatives.
Defence Alliance Highlights the Mahindra-Embraer Deal
Embraer Defence & Security CEO Bosco Da Costa Junior confirmed these distinct commercial partnerships. Specifically, Embraer chose Mahindra to pitch the KC-390 Millennium jet to the IAF after evaluating local industrial capabilities.
Furthermore, Embraer clarified that its alliance with Adani focuses strictly on civil aviation. Consequently, the military side of the Mahindra-Embraer deal remains exclusively with Mahindra. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence issued Requests for Proposal (RFPs) to five major Indian firms:
- Mahindra Group
- Tata Group
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)
- Reliance Defence
- Adani Group

How the Mahindra Embraer Deal Impacts IAF Transport Plans
The IAF’s MTA program seeks 60 medium transport aircraft to replace its aging Soviet-era AN-32 fleet. Thus, Embraer is positioning its twin-engine C-390 jet as a complete platform to standardize India’s air transport capability.
In addition, the KC-390 directly competes against the American C-130J offered by Tata and Lockheed Martin. Da Costa Junior emphasized that the KC-390 flies faster, carries heavier loads, and operates efficiently at higher altitudes.

Global Manufacturing Hub Expands the Embraer Deal
Finally, Embraer plans to turn India into a global manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub for the C-390 platform. Because Embraer holds roughly 70 orders worldwide, it requires extensive global MRO infrastructure.
As a result, building local support hubs will help Embraer maintain high operational availability rates across Asia. Moreover, the company confirmed its commitment to meeting all Indian Air Force delivery schedules.
