Passengers booking train tickets across India are noticing new starting digits on their reservation slips. The Indian Railways is Changing Your PNR; Do you know how to decode one? The Ministry of Railways is migrating its decades-old Passenger Name Record series under a major Passenger Reservation System upgrade. Consequently, travellers will now see 10-digit PNR numbers starting with 1, 3, 5, or 7 instead of traditional zone codes.
Center for Railway Information Systems upgrades decade-old reservation system
Furthermore, the Center for Railway Information Systems operates four primary database hubs in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. Traditionally, the initial three digits of a 10-digit PNR identified the booking zone and regional database center.
However, legacy database prefixing created operational bottlenecks within the Next-Generation Passenger Reservation System. Therefore, CRIS initiated a nationwide migration to streamline real-time seat availability, fare queries, and ticket modification processing.
| Data Center / Zone | Legacy PNR Prefix | New Migrated PNR Prefix | Target Rollout Timeline |
| Delhi (Northern Region) | Digit 2 | Series 1, 3, 5, or 7 | Phase-wise by December 2026 |
| Kolkata (Eastern Region) | Digit 6 | Series 1, 3, 5, or 7 | Phase-wise by December 2026 |
| Mumbai (Western Region) | Digit 8 | Series 1, 3, 5, or 7 | Phase-wise by December 2026 |
| Chennai (Southern Region) | Digit 4 | Series 1, 3, 5, or 7 | Phase-wise by December 2026 |
How to decode new PNR series across major express trains
Additionally, railway authorities are testing the new PNR series on 1,230 selected trains under a pilot project. For instance, PNRs for Train 14210 operating out of Lucknow now begin with the number 5.
Meanwhile, major services like Lucknow Mail and AC Express will adopt the new PNR series on November 17. Pushpak Express will transition on December 2. Thus, all trains across the national network will adopt the updated system by the third week of December.
Ticket re-issuance rules apply for date modifications during system migration
Consequently, railway officials clarified that receiving a PNR starting with 5 or 7 is not a scam. The system automatically assigns the migrated series to valid e-tickets and counter reservations.
However, passengers modifying travel dates on older tickets must cancel and rebook under the new system. Therefore, travelers should verify their 10-digit PNR online to ensure smooth journey verification across all railway zones.
