Commuters navigating central Vadodara will soon find relief from chronic bottlenecking and seasonal flooding near the railway hub. Indian Railways has sanctioned the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri in the Vadodara Division of Western Railway.
The ₹166.5 crore project will be executed as a 50:50 joint venture between Indian Railways and the Gujarat State Government, with each party contributing roughly ₹83.28 crore (₹83.2769 crore).
Replacing a Chokepoint: The Alkapuri Underpass Limits
The new grade-separated corridor directly targets long-standing infrastructural hurdles at the existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB). Situated near Vadodara Railway Station, the current underpass serves as a vital arterial link between Alkapuri and Kalaghoda.
Its physical limitations, however, have constrained city traffic for years:
- Height Restrictions: A low vertical clearance of approximately 3.0 metres prevents buses and larger commercial vehicles from passing through.
- Monsoon Disruptions: Sub-surface drainage limitations lead to recurrent waterlogging during heavy rainfall, regularly shutting down east-west movement.
- Capacity Saturation: The junction handles peak-hour loads topping 1,600 passenger car units (PCU) per hour, creating acute gridlock, pedestrian safety risks, and conflicting vehicle flows.
Seamless Multi-Modal Integration
Beyond easing local daily commutes, the elevated four-lane facility is engineered to bolster Vadodara’s wider transit network. Crucially, the ROB will allow heavy vehicular traffic to bypass tracks above grade without interrupting active train movements below.
Once operational, the bridge will serve as a high-capacity link tying together three critical regional transit nodes:
- The existing Vadodara Railway Station
- The central GSRTC Bus Station
- The upcoming Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Station
By providing grade-separated clearance and pedestrian-safe transit, the structure is designed to meet Vadodara’s projected traffic volume over the coming decades while resolving one of the city’s most congested transit choke points.
