Union Minister of State for Health Smt. Anupriya Patel addressed the 71st Foundation Day of AIIMS New Delhi today. Speaking as the Chief Guest, she praised the institution’s decades of service in medical education, research, and patient care.

She noted that AIIMS has become synonymous with clinical excellence and public trust since its launch in 1956. However, she stressed that this rich legacy carries greater responsibility for meeting national healthcare priorities.

Technology Should Strengthen, Not Replace, Human Care

Addressing emerging tools like AI, robotic surgery, and advanced diagnostics, Minister Patel outlined clear boundaries for medical technology:

  • Preserving Human Intuition: AI cannot replace a physician’s intuition or clinical diagnostic speed.
  • Guiding Surgical Precision: A robotic arm cannot replace a surgeon’s active judgement during operations.
  • Maintaining Bedside Care: Digital tools cannot replace the reassuring human presence of a bedside nurse.

“Technology must remain an instrument for better patient care and should complement, rather than replace, human clinical judgement.” — Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health

Massive Expansion Target Drives Healthcare Access

The Minister highlighted the ongoing expansion of medical infrastructure across the country. India has expanded from a single AIIMS at the turn of the century to 23 functional institutions today.

Since 2014, medical colleges grew from 387 to over 800. Undergraduate seats jumped from 51,000 to nearly 1.3 lakh, with plans to add another 75,000 seats soon.

Minister Patel urged Indian medical academia and industry to develop local medical technologies instead of relying on foreign imports. She asked AIIMS New Delhi to lead national capacity building and translate laboratory research into clinical solutions.

She also highlighted the success of Ayushman Bharat (AB PM-JAY), which has protected over 62 crore beneficiaries from medical debt over eight years. Concluding her address, she called for greater focus on the health and personal well-being of healthcare workers across the country.
