Unemployment Rate Fell to 3.2%: Union Minister L. Murugan at Chennai Rozgar Mela

Union Minister L. Murugan has said that unemployment has declined from 6% to 3.2% while distributing appointment letters to 285 candidates at the 20th Rozgar Mela in Chennai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also joined the nationwide event via video conferencing, where more than 51,000 young people received appointment letters across 45 locations for positions in Central Government departments and organisations such as the Income Tax Department, ESIC, Airports Authority of India, and Southern Railway.

In Chennai, Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan distributed appointment letters to 285 candidates.

The recruits have been selected for various Central Government departments and organisations. These include the Income Tax Department, ESIC, Airports Authority of India and Southern Railway.

Murugan cites fall in unemployment

Speaking at the event, Murugan said the country’s unemployment rate has declined from 6% to 3.2%.

He attributed the decline to various government initiatives. He specifically mentioned Make in India, Startup India, Stand-Up India and the MUDRA loan scheme.

The claim was made by the minister during his address at the Chennai event.

Murugan said these initiatives have helped young people move beyond being job seekers. He said they have also created opportunities for youth to become entrepreneurs.

Minister highlights startup growth

Murugan also cited growth in India’s startup ecosystem.

According to his remarks, the number of startups has increased from around 400 in 2014 to more than 2.5 lakh.

He said many startup founders are below the age of 30. The minister also stressed the need for young professionals to keep upgrading their skills.

He pointed to new opportunities in areas such as space technology and atomic energy.

Focus on public service

Addressing the newly recruited government employees, Murugan said their appointment letters represent more than employment.

He urged the recruits to view their roles as an opportunity to serve citizens.

He stressed the importance of honesty, accountability and empathy in public service.

The minister also highlighted the growing participation of women across sectors. These include space, defence, education, governance and public administration.

12.75 lakh appointment letters through Rozgar Melas

Murugan said more than 12.75 lakh appointment letters have been distributed through Rozgar Melas so far.

The government has been conducting Rozgar Melas as part of its employment initiative. The latest event was held at 45 locations across the country.

Later, speaking to the media, Murugan also discussed Navodaya schools in Tamil Nadu. He said the schools would provide quality education opportunities to students from economically weaker sections.
