Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured major orders for L&T Dhaka Metro Line 1 orders, covering two design and build systems packages for Bangladesh’s first underground metro project.
Awarded by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), the contracts cover track works and electrical systems under Contract Package CP09, along with signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors under CP10.
L&T did not disclose the value of the orders.
L&T orders cover track and electrical systems
Under CP09, L&T will work with Japanese partner Sumitomo Corporation to design, procure, install, test and commission track works and electrical infrastructure across the corridor.
The package includes power supply and distribution systems, traction substations, overhead catenary systems and associated electrical facilities.
Under CP10, L&T will execute signalling, telecommunications and platform screen door systems across the network. These systems will support train operations, passenger safety and communications infrastructure.
Together, the two packages cover key systems required to operate the metro line.
Dhaka Metro Line 1 to span around 31 km
Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Dhaka Metro Line 1 will extend approximately 31 km across two routes.
The Airport Route will connect Kamalapur with the Airport, while the Purbachal Route will run from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal.
The project will include 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj. It is planned as Bangladesh’s first underground metro system.
L&T expands urban transit project portfolio
L&T previously delivered the integrated railway systems package for Dhaka Metro Line 6, Bangladesh’s first metro corridor, which is now operational. The company is also executing an electrical and mechanical systems package for the Jakarta Metro.
Ramkumar S, Senior Executive Vice President and Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, said the latest orders reflected the company’s experience in delivering large-scale urban transit projects.
He said L&T would draw on its previous work in Dhaka and Jakarta to integrate multiple systems in coordination with original equipment manufacturers and project stakeholders.
The latest contracts expand L&T’s involvement in regional metro infrastructure, with work spanning track, electrical and passenger-facing railway systems.
