The announcement of shelving of strategic Uri-Baramulla rail line marks a major shift in Jammu and Kashmir’s regional transport infrastructure. Specifically, the Indian Railways cancelled the proposed 40-kilometre rail project connecting the border region of Uri to Baramulla. Additionally, authorities halted the double-lining of the 74-kilometre Qazigund-Srinagar-Budgam section.
Ecological Risks Prompt Uri-Baramulla Rail Line Shelved Decision
The Cabinet Secretariat officially returned both Northern Railway projects because of severe environmental impact warnings. Consequently, the Joint Director Works from the Railway Board confirmed these plans are no longer under consideration.
Moreover, the decision follows previous suspensions of the Anantnag-Pahalgam and Anantnag-Shopian rail links after local farmer protests. Thus, the government chose to protect fragile ecosystems over expanding rail tracks into sensitive border zones.

High-Seismic Vulnerability Drives Uri-Baramulla Rail Line Shelved Order
The proposed railway line passed directly through eco-fragile highlands in seismic Zone 5. Furthermore, the planned alignment bisected Baramulla town, local fruit orchards, and dense residential villages.

Baramulla MLA Javid Hassan Baig had submitted an official resolution against the alignment in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Specifically, he demanded comprehensive geotechnical and landslide assessments before any construction activity could proceed. Therefore, Baig welcomed the cancellation as a responsible move that safeguards local town heritage and future generations.

Strategic Logistics Face Setback After Rail Line Shelved
The proposed line aimed to extend the Udhampur-Baramulla railway toward the Line of Control. Consequently, the route was intended to accelerate military troop deployment and heavy logistical supply movement for defence forces.
However, severe environmental risks ultimately outweighed the strategic benefits of border connectivity. Meanwhile, Indian Railways will focus on maintaining safety along its operational network without compromising fragile mountain terrains.
