Maharashtra electric bus demand could reach around 50,000 units over the next three to four years, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday. However, he flagged that existing manufacturing capacity was insufficient to meet the projected requirement.
Speaking after inaugurating Pinnacle Industries’ new manufacturing facility, Fadnavis said several state transport bodies and municipal corporations planned large-scale electric bus procurement.
“Electric buses are our priority in Maharashtra. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation alone intends to procure 10,000 electric buses, while the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) requires around 30,000 buses. Pune and Nagpur municipal corporations also have substantial requirements,” he said.
Maharashtra outlines electric bus procurement plans
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to procure 10,000 electric buses, while MSRTC has a requirement of around 30,000 units.
The municipal corporations of Pune and Nagpur are also expected to contribute to the state’s overall demand.
Fadnavis said the combined requirement could reach approximately 50,000 electric buses within three to four years. He noted that current manufacturing capacity would not be sufficient to meet this demand.
Fadnavis urges Pinnacle Industries to expand capacity
The chief minister said he had urged Pinnacle Industries to expand its production capacity to address the growing requirement for electric buses.
He also highlighted the state’s preference for locally manufactured vehicles under the Make in Maharashtra initiative.
“Buses manufactured under the Make in Maharashtra initiative would be more convenient for us,” Fadnavis said.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari was also present at the inauguration of the new manufacturing facility.
