The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to quick commerce platform Zepto and three food businesses over alleged food safety, labelling and advertising violations. The regulator has also sanctioned adjudication proceedings against Storia Foods & Beverages Pvt Ltd.
The enforcement action, announced on Monday, covers complaints involving expired food products, misleading health claims, product descriptions and juice labelling.
FSSAI said the measures aim to protect consumers and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
FSSAI action against Zepto over alleged expired besan delivery
FSSAI issued a notice to Zepto Marketplace Pvt Ltd seeking an explanation regarding a complaint alleging the delivery of two packets of besan after their stated use-by date.
The products reportedly carried a “Use By: 12 September 2026” marking. The regulator has directed Zepto to verify the complaint and provide details about the order, delivery, warehouse, seller and product.
The notice seeks clarification on the circumstances surrounding the alleged delivery of the expired products.
HealthyHey, Bakelite face notices over product labelling
FSSAI issued a notice to HealthyHey Foods LLP over alleged misleading claims on its HealthyHey Nutrition Natural Cranberry Extract 25 per cent Capsules.
The regulator identified discrepancies in colour declarations on the product label. It also flagged the claim “Supports Urinary Tract Health”, stating that health and disease-risk-reduction claims require prior approval.
Bakelite Food Processing Pvt Ltd also received a notice over its Malpani’s Bake-Lite Puneri Cream Roll, sold through e-commerce platforms including Blinkit and Zepto.
According to FSSAI, the product’s ingredients list includes refined wheat flour, hydrogenated vegetable fat, margarine and sugar, but does not list milk, milk fat, cream or other dairy ingredients.
The regulator said the use of terms such as “Cream Roll” and “Creamy”, alongside images depicting a creamy filling, could mislead consumers about the product’s composition.
BMS Lifescience flagged over cranberry capsule claims
FSSAI issued a separate notice to BMS Lifescience concerning its HAOG’S Cranberry Urinary Tract Health Capsules.
The regulator said the product was being marketed under an expired registration certificate. It also flagged claims relating to urinary tract infections, kidney health and disease prevention, which it said required prior regulatory approval.
The notice forms part of the regulator’s broader action concerning product claims and compliance with applicable food regulations.
Storia faces adjudication over pomegranate juice claims
FSSAI has sanctioned adjudication proceedings against Storia Foods & Beverages Pvt Ltd over alleged misleading claims on its pomegranate juice product.
The regulator said the product contained 4 per cent pomegranate juice concentrate and 12 per cent apple juice concentrate. It raised concerns that the product’s branding and imagery could create a misleading impression about its composition.
FSSAI also questioned labelling statements concerning reconstituted juice, including “Equivalent to 100 per cent Fruit Juice (Reconstituted)” and “No Added Sugar”.
According to the regulator, the company’s explanation was found unsatisfactory following inspection, sampling and label scrutiny. Adjudication proceedings were subsequently sanctioned.
The actions involve notices and regulatory proceedings concerning alleged violations. The announcement did not state that final adjudication orders or penalties had been imposed on the companies.
