Barbil Bolanikhadan rail line doubling

The Barbil-Bolanikhadan rail line doubling project gained official approval from Indian Railways at an estimated cost of ₹122 crore. Specifically, the South Eastern Railway will construct a second track along this vital six-kilometer mineral corridor in Odisha. Furthermore, the capacity expansion aims to reduce freight train delays and clear route congestion.

Capacity expansion clears industrial freight bottlenecks

The existing single-line stretch currently handles around 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of originating iron ore. Consequently, daily traffic comprises about six loaded rakes moving high-grade ore and pellets from local mines. Furthermore, doubling this track will facilitate an additional 8.9 MTPA of freight traffic upon completion.

Barbil project strengthens key mineral corridors

The Barbil-Bolanikhadan section forms an essential part of the Energy, Mineral, and Cement Corridor of Indian Railways. Specifically, the line connects SAIL’s Bolani mines and private sidings to major steel plants and ports.

Additionally, early doubling prevents severe capacity constraints ahead of planned mine and port expansions in the region. Therefore, the improved rail connectivity will support growing industrial requirements and ensure smoother freight operations.
