The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a dedicated startup cell to help emerging food businesses navigate food safety regulations and compliance requirements.

The initiative will provide weekly online interactions and a dedicated email help desk for startups seeking regulatory guidance. In a social media post, the food regulator said startups could approach the cell every Wednesday to raise queries and seek assistance.

The move comes as FSSAI steps up scrutiny of food and beverage companies over alleged misleading advertisements, unsupported claims and labelling violations.

FSSAI startup cell to offer weekly regulatory guidance

The startup cell will give emerging food brands a channel to clarify regulatory requirements and resolve compliance-related queries.

The weekly online sessions are intended to provide live query resolution, while the email help desk will offer an additional route for businesses seeking guidance.

For startups entering the food sector, compliance requirements can cover product labelling, advertising claims and food safety standards. Access to regulatory guidance may help businesses understand these obligations as they develop and market products.

FSSAI has not provided further details in the supplied announcement about the cell’s staffing, response timelines or eligibility criteria.

FSSAI scrutiny of food labels and advertising claims

The initiative follows the issuance of around 150 notices to food and beverage companies in recent months over alleged misleading advertisements, false claims and labelling violations.

Recently, FSSAI issued notices to Nestle India and Zydus Wellness over alleged labelling issues and misleading claims concerning certain products.

The regulator asked the companies to provide scientific evidence supporting their advertisements.

Such scrutiny places greater emphasis on substantiating product claims and ensuring that labels and promotional material comply with applicable food regulations.

Compliance support for emerging food brands

The startup cell creates a dedicated channel for emerging businesses to seek clarification on regulatory requirements.

Its effectiveness will depend on how quickly startups can obtain guidance and how clearly the regulator communicates applicable standards. For food businesses, understanding labelling rules, advertising restrictions and food safety obligations remains essential to bringing products to market.

FSSAI’s initiative combines direct regulatory interaction with email-based assistance, offering startups an additional avenue to address compliance questions as they scale their operations.
