A Surat bridge construction cave-in in the city’s Simada area early Thursday caused part of a road and a shop-front wall to sink during excavation work.
The incident occurred while construction was underway for a bridge over a creek. The ground subsided near a shop, triggering panic among local residents and concerns about the stability of the adjoining structure.
The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) initiated emergency measures to stabilise the affected stretch and prevent further damage.
SMC undertakes stabilisation work after cave-in
Civic officials began filling the affected area with soil to stabilise the ground and reduce the risk of further subsidence.
During the response, officials identified a water pipeline running beneath the sunken section. They shut off the water supply as a precaution to facilitate repairs and prevent a possible leak from worsening the situation.
The civic body also assessed the safety of the adjoining shop structure. An SMC official said the building was safe following the initial intervention.
“Our first priority was to ensure the safety of the shop structure, and it is safe now,” the official said.
Further inspections and corrective measures are underway to assess the damage and ensure the affected stretch remains stable.
Bridge project agency served notice
The SMC issued a notice to the agency executing the bridge project, seeking an explanation for the incident and the circumstances that led to the ground giving way.
The agency was also directed to compensate affected shopkeepers for losses caused by the incident.
The civic official said compensation for damage to the shop would be covered under the agency’s risk insurance provisions.
“The damage to the shop will be compensated by the agency under the provisions of its risk insurance cover,” the official said.
The incident has raised questions about ground stability during excavation for the creek bridge. Further assessment will determine the extent of the damage and the corrective measures required before work can proceed safely.
